Our Pillars

Our Story

Founded in 2008, Mid-States Specialty Eggs was created by Marion Hostetler and family friend Dale Shrock in order “to produce a healthy product for the consumer in a way that supports our family farms.” After seeing the way the poultry industry was moving, the two – who were previously turkey farmers – decided that it was time for a more humane approach. “We’ve always been health-conscious, but poultry integrators began requiring us to give excessive amounts of antibiotics continuously to the birds we were raising for them. They looked at it as a way to protect their investment, I guess, but we knew there were better ways. When it finally got to the point where we didn’t want to eat those very same turkeys we were raising, we knew we had to look for something else,” Hostetler explained. Doing things the right way has been a cornerstone of MSSE since the beginning. Mid-States Specialty Eggs’ mission statement is:
“To produce the highest quality eggs with integrity and true customer service.”
MSSE’s mission statement was selected with intention, as Mid-States Specialty Eggs’ purpose is:
“serving our culture with a stable business opportunity by producing a revolutionary food product to retail customers.”
Both of these are building to the overall vision, which is:
“to be an organization that honors God while building strong relationships with our customers and employees as we work together on innovative goals to meet their needs.”

A Family Farm

Seventy-four percent of Mid-States Specialty Eggs is employee-owned, as stock has been sold to employees since 2015. “As owners of this organization we all look at it as being part of our life mission, part of our calling here on earth, to create an environment for farmers to thrive,” said Shrock. “Prior to starting this organization, it was typical for our farmers to have had a trade where they worked a second job simply to make ends meet. This took them away from their families and it didn’t align with our family values. However, the Lord has really blessed us so that we can help create stable family farms and workplaces for younger people. While the door of our turkey business closed, the Lord had a different plan and opened up many new doors for us. If we wait on the Lord, he’ll guide us through whatever comes our way, even growth and ongoing changes in the egg industry.” Treating hens with respect is a part of the fundamental approach MSSE has always taken towards the egg industry. “We’re taught in the Bible to be kind to animals and that it’s our duty to give them as good a life as possible. We believe that we’ve been appointed as stewards to take care of them and so we do.” With over 250 families and over 5.6 million hens, Mid-States Specialty Eggs combines industry-leading animal husbandry practices with large scale efficiency and professionalism, and finally wraps it up with exceptional customer service. We look forward to bringing you a healthy, ethically sourced egg.

Our Eggs

Mid-States Specialty  Eggs is a certified producer of Free Range, Cage-Free, Pasture Raised, Organic, & non-GMO eggs. With a personalized approach to flock management, we are able to develop plans that are specific to each farm and their flock to maintain consistency throughout our system. Each of our grading plants, located in Missouri and Arkansas, are certified SQF level 3 to ensure safe and quality food for our customers and their consumers.
Cage Free

Cage Free

Along with having absolutely zero cages or aviaries, our single layer systems allow hens enough floor space to freely exhibit natural behavior. Hens are able to spread their wings, turn around, and move about the barn free of constraint. Each hen has unlimited access to fresh drinking water and wholesome feed.  Our Cage Free eggs are produced in single layer houses with a limited number of hens per flock.  All are Certified Cage-Free with a 100% vegetable-based diet, no hormones or steroids, and are antibiotic-free.

Free Range

Free Range

Free Range Eggs are laid by hens that have access to the outdoors every morning that the weather permits. Each hen is free to walk outside to spread her wings, run, forage for insects, and take a dust bath.  These eggs are Certified Humane (HFAC) Standard, but not only is each hen provided at least 2 sqft of outdoor access, but they are also American Humane Certified Standard, which means each hen has 21.8 sqft of outdoor access.

Pasture Raised

Pasture Raised

Pasture-Raised Eggs are produced from hens with 108 sqft of beautiful outdoor accommodations. Each hen enjoys 108 sqft of rotated pasture year-round. Pastures are rotated to keep them green and plentiful.  Although hens graze on their favorite snacks produced by Mother Nature, they’re provided with a supplemental feed that is always available.  Our pasture-raised eggs are produced by small Mennonite Family Farms, with flocks from 4,000 to 12,500 hens. Pastures are free of herbicides and pesticides.
